Hair Practical

Curling Hair

Using heated rollers and curling irons we experimented with different curling techniques and what looks they both achieved.

Switch the heated rollers onto the heat setting number 2 and leave them to heat up. Keep the plastic flaps closed to keep in all the heat. When the rollers are hot enough switch on to heating level 1.
Make sure they are a good temperature and be careful not to burn yourself or your client.

Sectioning: It is personal preference how you choose to section the hair but it advised to start from the bottom and work up, or from the front to the back, which technique is neater for you to work with.
Make sure the section of hair you have ready is not wider than the roller itself or it will slide off. Depending on the hair type the section should be about ½ an inch thick.

Lift hair before rolling to give more volume to the root, for extra lift spray a little bit of hairspray. Use a tail comb to tighten and smooth hair around roller. Clips are colour coded to the rollers so remember to use right clip or grabby clips to hold them in place.

For the ‘glamour hair’ look use rollers from the top of the head to the ear and use a curling tong to curl the hair below it.

Plug in the rollers and leave leaning on metal stand to heat up. When curling make sure barrel is facing the correct way depending on the direction you are curling the hair. Use a comb at the hairline to protect your client from burning.
With bleached hair try to use as little heat as possible and reduce the temperature. Do not tug the tongs out but use a comb to gently unroll the hair. Clip the curled hair with a grip to keep the curl in place. Spray hairspray on the hands and slick any stray hairs down. Depending on how you want to curls to be you can either comb or brush them out to make them big and fluffy or hairspray and product to keep tighter thick curls.
